Redmi K20: All you need to know about Xiaomis Flagship Killer 20 smartphone

Just a day after OnePlus launched its OnePlus 7 series of flagship phones, Xiaomi teased a “Flagship Killer 2.0” Redmi smartphone to steal the thunder away from its Chinese counterpart. This is not the first time that Xiaomi has tried to challenge OnePlus. During the launch of the OnePlus 6T last year, Xiaomi took potshots at the company by putting ads targeting the price of the OnePlus device. That’s all in the past and now that OnePlus has made its move, the focus will shift on Redmi as it prepares to roll the dice to take on OnePlus with its own offering - a cheap flagship smartphone.

Before we talk about Redmi’s so called second flagship killer, it is necessary for you to know that both the companies are doing well in their respective categories. Xiaomi is riding the success of its affordable and mid-range devices, while OnePlus is enjoying the pole position in the flagship segment.

Coming back to the upcoming Redmi flagship launch, users may be in for a treat this summer as well. Last year, when OnePlus launched the OnePlus 6, Xiaomi brought the Poco F1 at an even more competitive price. The phone quickly gained traction because it offered flagship hardware at a starting price that matches the cost of an upper mid-range phone. This year, Redmi may launch a similar device. By similar we mean another phone with flagship hardware at a more competitive price that the OnePlus 7. Going by the teaser shared by Manu Kumar Jain, Global VP of Xiaomi, and Redmi India, the phone may be called the Redmi K20. (Did it ring a bell?)

The Redmi K20 is the same phone that is being discussed a lot in the media corridors. The information about the phone stemmed from China when company’s General Manager Liu Weibing started teasing details about the upcoming flagship on Weibo. At that time, the phone was touted to be named the Redmi X. Many leaks and stories later, the executive confirmed that the company wouldn’t name this phone “Redmi X” and rather call it something ‘better’, Redmi K20. Earlier, Jain teased the phone by sharing a poster which evidently confirmed that the phone is Redmi K20. There is no surety whether the phone will launch in India as the Poco F2 or Redmi K20, however, our bet is on the latter since the company's India marketing campaign is centered around the K20 name.

Redmi K20 Specs

Now coming to the specifications, the Redmi K20 is being teased to feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 SoC under the hood, which automatically puts it in the flagship league. The phone is touted to launch with 6GB and 8GB RAM models, with options to select from 64GB, 128GB and 256GB of storage. It is said to be a gaming-centric device, and is likely to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor and a ‘large’ battery. The flagship device is reported to come equipped with a 6.39-inch Full HD+ notchless display which may be protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The type of display is not known yet.

In the camera department, the phone is said to come with a pop-up front camera mechanism housing a 20MP sensor, and a triple-rear camera setup with a 48MP main, 8MP ultra-wide, and a 16MP telephoto camera at the back. Weibing had confirmed that the upcoming Redmi flagship will come equipped with a super wide-angle lens. It will also enable NFC capabilities, and retain the 3.5mm audio jack, which is not available on the OnePlus 7 Pro. The phone could be backed by a 3600 mAh battery that might support 27W fast charging. OnePlus 7 Pro sports a 4000mAh battery, and the regular OnePlus 7 has a 3700mAh battery.

For now, that's all we know about the Redmi K20. For more updates on the device, keep coming back to us.
